India boosting military to counter China's growing power

India is enhancing its military capabilities to counter the growing military prowess of China, the annual report of Defence Ministry for year 2012-13 said on Thursday. The report tabled in Parliament also expressed concern over Pakistan’s continuing support to terrorists.

Reiterating that there is adequate space for India and China to rise peacefully and co-exist in harmony, the report, however, said India remains “conscious and watchful” of the implications of China’s military profile in the immediate and extended neighbourhood.

In this backdrop, India is also taking necessary measures to develop requisite capabilities to counter any adverse impact on its security, it said.

The document said although the unresolved boundary dispute between India and China is a factor in India’s security calculus, India has a strategic and co-operative partnership with its eastern neighbour. As regards Pakistan, the report said security situation there is a cause of concern due to continuing activities of terrorist organisations on its territory and territories under its control.

The existence of terrorist camps across the lOC and continued infiltrations demonstrate Pakistan’s attitude to terrorists organisations even though such outfits pose a danger to its own social and political fabric, mentioned the report.

Given this scenario, the security forces were effectively tackling infiltrations in Jammu and Kashmir, it added.

On the situation in the north-east, the Government said security scenario was improving but the security forces were closely monitoring activities of certain insurgent groups and were alert to tackle any increase in insurgent activity in the region.
