India asks Pak to ensure safety of prisoner Ansari

India has asked Pakistan to ensure the security of Indian prisoner Hamid Nehal Ansari following reports of an attack on him inside the jail. India has also asked Pak authorities to repatriate him at the earliest since he has completed his three years of prison term. India has also sought consular access to Ansari. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met the family of Ansari and assured that Government will keep pursuing his case with Pakistan. Ansari, a Mumbai resident, was arrested in 2012 for illegally entering Pakistan from Afghanistan on fake papers reportedly to meet a girl he had befriended through Facebook. Ansari was sentenced to three years imprisonment by a military court. Ansari’s lawyer told Peshawar High Court that his client was attacked at least thrice by jail inmates in recent months.
