Accusing the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of being the “main suspect” in the coal scam, BJP’s national vice-president Balbir Punj said here on Wednesday that it was “impossible and impractical” to expect CBI to reach out to the “masterminds” of the scam, with “main suspect” the PM occupying the country’s highest office.
“I do not rule out the possibility that the PM may have appended his signatures on the dubious and suspicious coal block allocation proposals under the instructions or suggestions from powers that be,” Punj said, as he reiterated his party’s demand for the Prime Minister’s resignation.
Punj said that a million dollar question that warranted an answer was the identity of that person or persons, who instructed the Prime Minister and made him, endorse decisions taken elsewhere in total contravention of all rules and norms.
Talking to mediapersons here, Punj demanded that a Special Investigating Team (SIT) consisting of senior police officials, with proven track record, be constituted under the direct supervision of the Supreme Court to investigate the coalgate and bring the guilty to book.
Dubbing the role of the sacked law Minister Ashwani Kumar in the coal scam as being a “marginal” one, Punj said, “The Minister (Kumar) was guilty of doctoring the CBI report on the scam. But why did he do itIJ. It was to bail out the Prime Minister and those who call the shots in the UPA II dispensation”.
Punj charged that the coal gate was a “multi-layered” scam, with its roots reaching out to the highest in the
UPA set-up.
“The CBI is subservient to political masters in the system and thus is incapable of unmasking all the characters of this sordid drama because of their high status in the establishment and ripping open all the layers of the scam,” he sad.
