IMD says Vayu could recurve

The Ministry of Earth Sciences on Saturday said that cyclonic storm ' Vayu' is likely to recurve and hit the Kutch coast of Gujarat. "Vayu is likely to recurve on June 16 and hit Kutch between June 17-18," M Rajeevan, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences said.

However, the intensity of the cyclone is likely to get reduced, Rajeevan said, adding that it may hit the coast as a cyclonic storm or a deep depression. He said the Gujarat government has been alerted about the possible recurvature of the cyclonic storm.

Cyclone Vayu was to hit the Gujarat coast on Thursday, but it changed its course over Oman on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the southwest monsoon will further delay in Mumbai and Goa due to Vayu. Meanwhile, the Climate Prediction Centre of the US National Weather Service on Friday said the location and strength of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) wave may play an important role in the development of monsoon over India during the next several weeks.
