I am under police surveillance: Sapkal

In a major development, Maharashtra Congress President Harshvardhan Sapkal on Friday alleged that he was being kept under surveillance by the police at his Nana Chowk residence in south Mumbai.

Addressing a news conference here, Sapkal said, “The police are keeping under surveillance at my Nana Chowk residence in Mumbai. The police have been continuously monitoring my movements. This morning, a plainclothes policeman directly entered my bedroom for surveillance and questioning”.

Contending that he was being kept under watch for the third time, Sapkal demanded to know why the Opposition leaders were being spied upon by the Government.

“On whose orders are we being watched? Is the surveillance being carried out on the orders of Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis? This is part of the BJP’s tendency to monitor its opponents — first Pegasus, then phone tapping, and now they’ve reached our bedrooms. But we will not bow down to such intimidation,” Sapkal said.

Giving details of the manner in which the police were keeping a watch on him, Sapkal said, “This morning, a policeman entered my bedroom and began inspecting and questioning me — asking me if I was going to hold a press conference and whether journalists had arrived. When I asked him as to how he did enter my room and, on whose orders, he said it was following the orders of his senior officers. He then asked me to talk to them on the phone.”
