Hooch tragedy returned in West Bengal where at least 10 people died and many others fell sick in the past 36 hours in Ghola Bazar areas of South 24 Parganas, sources said, while adding that the angry locals set fire to a number of hooch dens.

locals in Charan-Shibnagar-Ghola area said at least 50 persons had been rushed to the hospitals. While the police put the “official toll” at five persons unofficial sources said the figure was anywhere between 10 and 14.

Many of the sick had been rushed to Kolkata as their conditions had worsened, police said adding that four persons had thus far being added and more raids were being conducted.

The locals who went around burning down hooch dens complained of a police-liquor mafia nexus saying the local politicians were also involved in the hooch trade.

In December 2011, more than 200 people had perished in a similar incident and in the same district forcing the State Government to announce `2 lakh each as compensation.
