Himanta quits Cong, writes to Sonia blaming family-centric politics

Former Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday resigned from the Assam legislative Assembly but not before dashing a letter to AICC chief Sonia Gandhi blaming the family centric politics and lack of democracy in the party as the main reason for his leaving the party. “I waited for so many days that the Congress will approach the Speaker to disqualify me as I had won the Jalukbari constituency on a Congress ticket. However, as it did not happen, I tendered my resignation to the Speaker today,” he said.

Sarma also sent a letter to the AICC chief saying: “From 2012 I have observed that the situation had been deteriorating and the party is losing respect due to callous attitude of the State leadership. The third time victory had gone into heads and arrogance has started replacing dedication”.

Sarma also pointed out at the lack of democracy in the party and said, “There is great dearth of inner party democracy in Congress. When I had told Rahul Gandhi that in front of central observers 52 MlAs out of 79 categorically and emphatically sought the ouster of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, he said it is his prerogative to change the Chief Minister. Isn’t it a fact that our constitution has given power to MlAs to elect a leader of their choiceIJ If that is the constitutional provision, where from does Rahul Gandhi get the prerogative to choose who will rule the people of AssamIJ”

Sarma also mentioned as to how the Assam Congress legislators were forced to work hard to get Sanjay Singh elected from Assam into Rajya Sabha against their conscience just to ensure the electoral victory of Rahul Gandhi in Amethi in 2014 lok Sabha polls.
