High drama in lS as SP MP tears papers

Published on:

Insisting again that their motion on demonetisation issue be admitted under the provision mandating voting, the Opposition on Thursday stalled the proceedings of the   lok Sabha for nearly an hour after it met for the day when some papers were also torn and thrown around by a Samajwadi Party member. The House was later adjourned for the day as pandemonium continued.

High drama was witnessed when SP member Akshay Yadav tore some papers next to the chair of the Secretary General and flung it across, as several members from Congress, TMC and SP were in the Well raising anti-Government slogans.

A visibly upset Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the House till noon. It was not clear whether the paper torn was picked from the table of the Secretary General.

Immediately after the Chair made obituary reference to former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Ram Naresh Yadav and Carnatic exponent M Balamurlikrishnan who died recently, members from Congress, TMC and SP demanded taking up the adjournment motion on demonetisation issue.

Mahajan refused to concede Opposition’s demand with Government maintaining that it was ready to have discussion under rule 193 not entailing voting.

Congress, left parties, SP and TMC rushed into the Well raising slogans as the House took up Question Hour.  Members from AIADMK and AAP were seen standing at the aisle but did not join the others in the Well.

Amid the chaos, the Speaker adjourned the House immediately and soon after adjourned it for the day after it re-assembled.

Expressing grave displeasure, lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan warned the SP member for the act in the Well, terming it a “disorderly Act”.

This conduct of Yadav is a “gross violation of the norms of standards and etiquettes laid down under Rules and Conventions of the House”, she said, adding “this conduct is not proper on the part of the member and also for the dignity and prestige of the House”.

“I therefore, while, expressing my grave displeasure over the conduct of Shri Yadav warn him to refrain from such from disorderly act in future,” she added.
