High Court stays Mumbai metro tunnel work for two weeks

Published on:

The Bombay High Court on Friday stayed for two weeks the ongoing tunnelling work at Fort in south Mumbai for the proposed Metro III line along the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz route, to facilitate a study of the impact of the excavation work on the nearby  heritage and iconic buildings, including the 161-year-old building housing the JN Petit Institute library.

Having taken cognisance of the apprehensions by the petitioner that the ongoing Metro-III tunnelling work was causing damage to JN Petit Institute library and other heritage buildings in the area, a HC bench directed that a committee be constituted to study the effects of such tunnelling work on the buildings and to suggest ways to continue with the work without damaging the buildings in the area.

Petition was filed by JN Petit Institute trustees against Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, the State Government and the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation ltd.
