Heavy rains in T give hope to farmers

Published on:

Triggered by the low pressure in west central Bay of Bengal and aided by the vigorous south-west monsoon, copious rains continued over parts of Telangana, Rayalaseema and neighbouring Karnataka increasing the intensity of inflows into several key irrigation dams in the drought hit regions and renewing the hope of farming communities.

It was yet another days of heavy rains in the State Capital, Hyderabad, where the roads turned into rivulets. Rains continued throughout the day bringing fresh inflows into the city reservoirs Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar. But woes were unbound for the people living in the low lying areas and the road users and water had clogged the roads and traffic junctions bringing the traffic to a halt.

The fresh rains increased the inflows into the projects on river Krishna both in Karnataka and Telangana. Following sufficient inflows, the authorities in Karnataka continued to discharge water from Narayanpur to Jurala project of Telangana. Jurala project in Telangana was receiving 16980 cusecs and releasing 8700 cusecs towards Srisailam in neighboring Kurnool. Naraynpur itself was receiving 29755 cusecs from Almatti and was likely to be filled to the capacity of 37.8 tmcft.

The prospects of water level in Srisailam dam increasing significantly were bright as more water was coming from another direction. Authorities again opened the gates of Sunkesula dam on Tungabhadra river to release 51000 cusecs of water towards Srisailam. Tungabhadra was in spate following heavy rains in Bellary district of Karnataka.

By far Rayalaseema was the major beneficiary of the current round of rainfall over the last few days not only bringing relief to the parched districts of Kurnool and Kadapa but also adding a beautiful tourist spot to the map.

The copious rains have created fresh water falls in the hills around the temple town of Ahobilam near Allagadda in Kurnool. The scene of water falling down in to the deep valleys around Ahobilam in Nallamall forest has turned the region in to a big tourist attraction. local say they don’t remember when such a phenomenon occurred earlier in this region.

Rains have also brought heavy flows into Kundu river on the borders of Kurnool and Kadapa. Officials said Kundu was getting an inflow of 700 cusecs.

Rain water also entered the low lying areas of Kodumur town of Kurnool district after spate in Mondi rivulet.

Meanwhile a meeting of ministers chaired by the deputy Chief minister Mahmood Ali reviewed the situation arising out of incessant rains specially in the low lying areas of Hyderabad

While the rains have altered the situation for the irrigation projects on the river Krishna, most of the Telangana projects on river Godavari were still dry as there was hardly any inflows in the river from Maharashtra. The projects including Sriramsagar and Nizam Sagar have not received any inflows over the last few days.

Telangana, which was staring at one of the worst droughts in the recent years has heaved a sigh of relief as the fresh rains have improved the over all situation, though it still remains rain deficient.
