Heavy rain likely on Diwali in Tamil Nadu

Published on:

North and Central Tamil Nadu will have a wet Diwali this year as a fall out of the  ‘depression’ formed in the Bay of Bengal on Sunday, according to Indian Meteorological Department.

“There was a depression formed in the Bay of Bengal which was expected to cross Tamil Nadu by Monday. But it got stuck up 40 km away from  Cuddalore coast . The depression has got stagnated near Cuddalore over the last five hours and there is every possibility of it getting weakened  over the next couple of hours. There is no chance of any cyclone hitting the Tamil Nadu coast as of now,” S Bagulayan Thampi, deputy director general of meteorology, IMD, told The Pioneer.

He said though the depression would get weak, north and central Tamil Nadu will get good rainfall as a fall out of this phenomenon. “We will have a wet Diwali in Chennai,” said Thampi. Chennai had

copious rainfall since Sunday morning . The Chennai coast saw heavy winds on Sunday and Monday but there were no untoward incidents.

Sunday evening and night was unusually calm in Chennai because the rains prevented the people from bursting Diwali crackers. The “celebrations” began only after the rain subsided by Monday late evening.

This was the first depression to be formed off Tamil Nadu coast in this season. It is the North East Monsoon which sets in October which brings rainfall to various parts of Tamil Nadu. Since the South West Monsoon always eludes Tamil Nadu, it is the rainfall in October-November which replenishes the water sources in the State.
