Heavy rain and strong winds continued to disrupt normal life across Kerala on Sunday, with waterlogging reported in low-lying areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for five districts over October 25 and 26, warning of extremely heavy rainfall.
Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad are under red alert on Sunday, while Idukki and Palakkad will be under red alert on Monday. Isolated places in these districts could receive more than 204.4 mm of rain in 24 hours.
Educational institutions and tourist destinations, including adventure tourism sites and trekking locations, have been ordered to close in districts under red alert.
The IMD has also issued orange and yellow alerts for several districts, warning of heavy rainfall over the coming days.
On October 25, an orange alert is in force in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Kannur. On October 26, the alert will cover Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Malappuram.
Isolated places in orange-alert districts could receive rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm in 24 hours.
A yellow alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha and Kasaragod on Sunday. On Monday, it will cover Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kozhikode and Wayanad.
According to the IMD, a low-pressure area over the southeastern Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep region is contributing to the prevailing weather conditions. A trough associated with a cyclonic circulation extends across Kerala towards the northern Tamil Nadu coast.
Another well-marked low-pressure area over the east-central and adjoining southeastern Bay of Bengal is also expected to intensify, potentially influencing weather conditions.
Residents, particularly those in red- and orange-alert districts, have been advised to monitor official weather bulletins and follow instructions issued by local authorities.
