The 2G Court on Tuesday deferred the hearing on cognizance of the Aircel-Maxis case chargesheet to January 11 due to CBI’s failure to provide sanction for prosecution against five officers, who are co-accused of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram. Judge OP Saini also extended interim protection given TO Chidambaram and son Karti, though Special Public Prosecutor Tushar Mehta reiterated for custodial interrogation of the duo citing “some new documents” emerging during the probe.
CBI had on November 26 promised to the court to produce pending five sanctions soon while providing sanction to prosecute Chidambaram. The five officers co-accused with Chidambaram are former finance secretaries Ashok Jha and Ashok Chawla and two serving IAS officers Kumar Sanjay Krishnan and Deepak Kumar Singh and Ram Saran, retired under secretary in the Finance Ministry. The sanctions for prosecution against these five officers have to be obtained from Finance Ministry. CBI earlier told the Judge that they have submitted to Government a week before filing chargesheet on July 19.
