The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday expressed dismay at the barbaric incidents of Sandeshkhali before quashing Section 144 of CrPC, earlier clamped by the police administration. This would enable the Opposition parties a free entry in the river islands.
In his order the single Bench of Justice Joy Sengupta said that the police could show no justification of the prohibitive orders being clamped throughout Sanedshkhali block.
The Court said that such orders could be imposed selective areas where disturbance was taking place and not the entire block. The Judge however, ordered deployment of additional armed police personnel at Sandeshkhali.
Earlier the teams of BJP, CPI(M) and the Congress had been stopped by the police to visit the areas on the pretext of prohibitive orders.
