HC orders CBI probe in Bengal teacher job scam

Already reeling under a plethora of court orders directing CBI and ED probes into government affairs there was more embarrassment for the Bengal Government even as the Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered yet another CBI investigation into the alleged irregularities in the recruitment of secondary school teachers.

The role of some senior officials of the School Service Commission (as also personal assistants of a senior minister) which had conducted the recruitments have come under scanner.

The Court had already ordered CBI probe into the appointment of hundreds of Group D staff and directed the Agency to initiate criminal proceedings in the case.

While adjudicating upon a batch of pleas alleging illegal appointment of assistant teachers for Class 9 and Class 10 in State run schools the Division Bench of Justice Abhihit Ganguly on Thursday directed the CBI to start investigation into the alleged teachers’ recruitment scam.

“…this matter is also required to be investigated by CBI byregistering a new case in this matter as it relates to appointment of Assistant in Class IX and X,” the Court said.

The Court also allowed the investigators to expand their scope of probe if required to politicians. The Court had earlier expressed surprise as to on what grounds the SSC which was responsible for recruitment of school staff had to take help of an advisory committee.

The said committee comprising 4-5 persons allegedly included secretaries of a very senior State minister.
