HC defers Salman's appeal against conviction till July 13

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday adjourned till July 13 a hearing on Salman Khan’s appeal challenging his conviction in the 2002 hit-and-run case, after the actor’s lawyer sought three weeks’ time to ascertain if the case papers he had received from the court were in order.

Before a hearing on the actor’s appeal against his conviction could begin, Salman’s lawyer Amit Desai said that though both his client and the State had received copies of “paper book” (compilation of evidence and documents) from the court, he needed at least three weeks’ time to go through the papers he had received.

In elaboration, Desai told the court that he needed time to ascertain as to whether there was any need for translation of any document in vernacular language into English. Similarly, he wanted to check if any document was missing. In such an event,  he would file an application seeking a direction to place them on record.

As against three weeks’ time sought by the actor’s counsel, Justice AR Joshi adjourned the hearing till July 13, to facilitate Desai scrutinise the case papers made available to him by the court.

Wednesday’s was the second occasion in a fortnight when the hearing on Salman’s appeal came to be deferred. Earlier on June 15, the high court had adjourned the hearing on Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s appeal challenging his conviction in the 2002 hit-and-run case, till July 1, after the Judge found that the court staff had not served case papers to both sides. The actor had moved the HC after he was convicted by a Sessions Court on May 6 to five years’ rigorous imprisonment in the long-drawn 2002 hit-and-run case.
