Guv Rajkhowa takes over all powers in Arunachal

With proclamation of President’s Rule, Arunachal Pradesh Governor JP Rajkhowa has taken over all powers and functions of the Arunachal Pradesh on behalf of President of India with immediate effect even as the Governor has appealed to everyone to cooperate for smooth functioning of the affairs of the State.

The Raj Bhavan has been turned into a virtual fortress with deployment of security forces, officials said adding that a total of 17 companies of Central paramilitary forces had been arrived in Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday to assist the State police in maintaining any probable law and order situation.

The Governor convened a meeting of senior officers of the State headed by Chief Secretary Ramesh Negi at Raj Bhavan in Tuesday evening and advised the officers to ensure that there is no law and order and security problems in the State and laws must be enforced in letter and spirit for safeguarding the interest of the common people.

“The Governor also instructed the Chief Secretary to issue a circular to all the departments and offices to maintain utmost transparency in decision making and execution of various works and take firm action against corruption. Good Governance and corruption free administration must be ensured under President Rule, as expected by the people of Arunachal Pradesh,” a statement issued by the Raj Bhavan said on Wednesday.

It may be mentioned here that the Raj Bhavan in Itanagar has been in the eye of a storm a few days back after supporters of Chief Minister Nabam Tuki held several protests against the Governor in front of the Raj Bhavan after the Governor preponed the session of the Arunachal Pradesh assembly last month, leading to a constitutional crisis in the hill state.

While the Congress legislators who supported Chief Minister Nabam Tuki did not take part in the preponed session of the assembly, the dissident faction of the Congress legislators teamed up with the BJP and Independents and held the session at a community hall and at a hotel and impeached the Speaker and moved a no confidence motion against the Tuki government. The Gauhati High court, however, stayed the matter initially and subsequently it was taken to the Supreme Court, where it is being heard by a constitutional bench.
