Bengal Governor MK Narayanan does not think that some intellectuals who appear in television talk shows also make pornographic movies as claimed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Reacting to a specific question Narayanan told the media that he had not heard about such comments being made adding yet, he did not believe that the intellectuals were involved in such activities.
“How can I comment on it as I have not heard the statementIJ But I hope not.” the Governor said.
A miffed Banerjee who had strongly reacted to the largescale criticism by the civil society against rising incidents of crime against women — particularly in the wake of the latest rape-and-murder cases at Kamduni and Gede — told a public rally that “Many of those who criticise the Government for isolated incidents are themselves involved in making pornographic films.”
Banerjee had also got embroiled in a verbal duet with the villagers at Kamduni where she went to inspect the situation.
When confronted by the locals regarding the deteriorating law and order situation and lack of amenities, Banerjee at once asked them to “shut up!” and called them Maoists and CPI(M) agents who were up to fishing in the troubled waters.
The volatile Chief Minister’s statement against the television panellists has evoked strong criticism
from a large section of the civil society who summarily condemned the Chief Minister’s statement. “Never before has any political person insulted the civil society the way she has” Samir Aich painter said.
“We had also criticised earlier Governments and other political parties but they did not attacked us in such a humiliating way,” said Miratun Nahar social activist.
Meanwhile, Banerjee on Sunday took some damage control exercise in the wake the huge protest rally in Kolkata on saying, “We are looking forward to the intellectuals to help reform the society.”
