In a major step towards strengthening public safety and creating a safer city, Gurugram Police has announced the installation of 70 Video-Based Emergency Call Points across the city.
The initiative is being implemented under the Smart City project in collaboration with the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA).
A trial run of the system was successfully carried out on Wednesday by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Dr Rajesh Mohan, under the supervision of Police Commissioner, Vikas Arora. Police officials said the move is aimed at providing quick and effective emergency assistance to citizens while simultaneously helping law enforcement agencies keep a stronger check on criminal elements.
“These emergency call points will act as a lifeline for citizens in distress. They will be directly connected to Dial 112, the Police Comm-
issioner’s Control Room, and the concerned police stations, ensuring that help reaches people without delay. To make them easily visible from a distance, each call point will also be equipped with a beacon light,” said DCP Mohan while demonstrating the system.
The newly introduced devices will operate on a two-way video communication system, enabling citizens to directly connect with police personnel through live video calling. In an emergency, anyone can press the button on the device to instantly seek help.
The complainant can narrate their problem visually as well as verbally to the control room, making it easier for police to assess the situation in real time.
Significantly, if the video connection drops midway, the control room will have the ability to reconnect automatically with the person in need, ensuring continuous assistance until the issue is resolved. “This feature is crucial in life-threatening situations where every second counts,” officials explained.
Apart from handling emergency complaints, the call points will also serve other purposes. Police will be able to use them for making public safety announcements, crowd management, and alerting citizens during accidents, natural disasters, or law-and-order situations.
Officials added that the project reflects the police department’s commitment to combining technology with community policing. “Not only will it improve response time, but it will also instill a greater sense of security among residents. With these call points, Gurugram will be one step closer to becoming a truly smart and safe city,” said DCP Mohan.
The installation work is expected to be completed soon, with all 70 emergency call points becoming operational across key locations in Gurugram.
