Gujarat to permanently shift people to higher ground

Published on:

In the wake of low-lying areas near riverbanks being submerged in floods, the Gujarat Government may consider shifting people permanently to safer, higher places as a long-term strategy. This was stated by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani while touring the flood-ravaged villages in Banaskantha and Patan district for the last three days.

Rupani, who visited Kuda village in lakhni taluka in Banaskantha district in the morning and Ghunsal in the same taluka later, observed that the Banaskantha district has been facing heavy rains frequently, as in 2015 and again in 2017, requiring repeatedly shifting the affected people. If necessary, he said, such villages could be transplanted with the consent of people as per the need.

The Chief Minister lauded the enduring spirit of the flood-hit people to brave the odds and assured them of all possible help from the Government.

A large number of people had gathered to welcome the Chief Minister.
