Gujarat HC to hear Teesta's anticipatory bail plea today

The Gujarat High Court will hear the anticipatory bail application of social activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand on Tuesday in the Gulbarg society embezzlement case.

The Ahmadabad Police had already filed a rejoinder affidavit against Teesta Setalvad and Javed Anand in the case. According to the affidavit filed by ACP KN Patel, Teesta Setalvad in her additional affidavit-in-rejoinder had admitted that her Sabrang Trust had not filed the audited annual account from 2002-03 to 2007-08, before the Charity Commissioner, Mumbai as against her repeated claims that accounts of their two NGOs — Sabrang Trust and CJP — are regularly audited and submitted to the statutory authorities for scrutiny.

Setalvad in her rejoinder affidavit stated that she had filed an affidavit in April 2014 with the Charity Commissioner, Mumbai for condonation of delay and had submitted the audited reports of these six years. Surprisingly, Setalvad had claimed “miscommunication between the auditor and herself” as the reason for non-submission of the audited reports.

Police in its affidavit stated that “The auditors have deliberately chosen to provide financial transactions details only of a limited period and that too selectively for one account only to show limited financial transactions of the petitioners. It is a serious misconduct on the part of auditors.”

Police have also questioned the German award of 10,000 euros given to Teesta in 2003 which was directly credited to her personal account.
