The Gujarat High Court on Wednesday dismissed a Public Interest litigation (PIl) seeking direction to the Central Government to share the details of caste-based Socio-Economic Caste Census-2011 with the State Governments and other authorities to carry out a proper analysis before inclusion or exclusion of any new caste in the existing list of castes under reserved category. The court of Chief Justice R S Reddy and Justice V M Pancholi turned down the petition on the ground that at this juncture there was no cause to assume that the Government would not carry out a proper analysis of the collected data.
lawyer Amit Panchal said that as the caste based census report was handed over to the Union Government in 2015 but had not been made public nor had its details been shared with the State Governments. He went on to say that his client had contended that unless a proper analysis of the caste based data was done, any inclusion or exclusion in the list of castes under reserved category could be detrimental.
