Responding to the call given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, more than 300 office-bearers of BJP from his home-State Gujarat, all the State BJP MPs and most of the MlAs have decided to surrender subsidy on lPG.
The Prime Minister was recently quoted as saying that if well-off people would not take subsidy on lPG the surplus money saved from it will be diverted to those who still use wood for cooking. Already more than 3.5 lakh well-off people have given up subsidised lPGs across the country, including some of the well-known industrialists. Now, the office-bearers of Gujarat BJP have joined the bandwagon.
“As per the scheme, the money saved on surrendered subsidy will not go to Government Treasury but it will be given to those who still use wood for cooking. This will also help address the problem of climate change. Deforestation is the result of people still sustaining themselves on wood, which eventually plays a key role in climate change,” said Vijay Rupani, general secretary of Gujarat BJP, who is also the Cabinet Minister in the Anandiben Patel Government.
Gujarat BJP spokesman Harshad Patel said that the decision was collectively taken by all the office-bearers on the sidelines of the State Executive meet of Gujarat BJP on Sunday. The proposal of State BJP chief RC Faladu was wholeheartedly accepted by the office-bearers without any opposition, he added. Apart from State BJP office-bearers, all the BJP MPs and most of the MlAs would also surrender subsidy on lPG, added Patel.
Meanwhile, on the Gujarat foundation Day on May 1, the State BJP would kick-start a week-long Mahasampark Abhiyan (Public Relation campaign) in wake of the upcoming polls of local bodies to be conducted in October this year. The campaign will end on May 8 with the felicitation of BJP workers, who are instrumental in enrolling more than 1,000 new primary members during the party’s enrolment drive.
