Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday mocked the Congress over its showing in the Legislative Council elections, asking on X how many of the 28 seats contested across four states the party had won — and adding a playful emoji to the post.

"MLC elections in 28 seats across 4 big states — Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Karnataka. Elections held using ballot papers. Guess how many seats Congress won?" Modi said.

The taunt came as results of the October 23 polls, held on ballot paper, were still being counted. In Karnataka, where the Congress is in office, the party lost all four seats to the BJP-JD(S) combine. The Congress was also trailing or had lost in the other states, even as counting continued in some constituencies.

The Prime Minister's post was read as both a jibe at the party's organisation and a rebuttal of the Opposition's charge that the BJP's recent victories came from manipulation of electronic voting machines and electoral rolls. The Opposition has been campaigning on allegations that the Election Commission fixed the Special Intensive Revision of rolls to the BJP's advantage.

The Congress and its allies have hit the streets over the SIR issue and are planning a campaign to take the charge to voters.
