Grievances which sowed seeds for separatism

Published on:

Perception of injustices by the successive Andhra dominant Governments became the cause of frequent bouts of agitation for separate Telangana State.

Proponents of Telangana like Kaloji Narayan Rao, Prof Jayashankar and Vidyasgar Rao have been raising the issue of declining share of locals in the Government jobs, diversion of more and more river waters and resources from Telangana to Andhra.

lack of proper representation to Telangana at the highest level of leadership in the State also added fuel to the fire. Out of the 57 years, Andhra Pradesh has been ruled by Andhra CMs for almost 44 years.

Telangana, being the largest of the three regions with 41.47% of total area and nearly 41% population, contributes 76% of the State’s revenue.

Telangana supporters point out that of the total areas irrigated by the major projects, 74.25% was in coastal Andhra, 7.55% in Rayalaseema against a meager 18.2% in Telangana.

Situation on the Government jobs was still worse. Share of local people had dwindled to less than 20% in total strength of employees.

Situation in the State Secretariat was still worse. less than 10% of the jobs were in the hands of Telangana people and the share of Telangana among the heads of the department was less than 3%. No Advocate General of the State has ever been appointed from Telangana.

It was the Andhra politicians who abolished the regional development councils and Mulki Rule meant for safeguarding the interest of Telangana people.
