Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s bête noire Keshubhai Patel’s political outfit Gujarat Parivartan Party (GPP) has submitted a memorandum to governor Kamala Beniwal requesting her to convince retired Justice RA Mehta to resume the office of Gujarat lokayukta.
After winning the legal battle which lasted for almost two years, Mehta had declined to take charge as Gujarat lokayukta. According to GPP, the seven-page letter of Mehta to Beniwal showing his unwillingness was not resignation. “The letter shows the biased attitude of the State Government, due to which Mehta feels that he may not perform his constitutional duty in anticipation of non-cooperation from the Gujarat Government,” says the memorandum.
The party also mentioned that the delay in issuing notification by the State Government might have hurt feeling of the retired Justice. “As a constitutional head, you can give assurance to protect the lokayukta in case non-cooperation is done by the State Government. We request you to make one effort to convince Justice Mehta in the interest of people of Gujarat to resume the office of lokayukta,” the party urged the Governor.
