Govt's attempt to keep judges from heading key tribunals under SC scrutiny

The Government’s attempt to keep judges from heading vital tribunals, including the National Green Tribunal among 19 others, faced scrutiny before the Supreme Court on Friday.

A bench of Chief Justice JS Khehar and Justice DY Chandrachud sought the Centre’s response in two weeks to a PIl filed by a NGO Social Action for Forests and Environment filed in this regard.

The petition argued by advocate Vivek Chib challenged the introduction of the Tribunal, Appellate Tribunal and other Authorities Rules 2017 as part of the Finance Act that came into effect from April 1 this year.
