'Govt wants to kill me politically'

Chief of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and former militant leader, Hagrama Mohilary, on Wednesday alleged that the ruling Congress led Assam Government was trying to “politically murder” him.

Mohilary, a militant-turned-politician heads the Bodoland Territorial Council, a territorial council created under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution to run administration in four districts of Assam - Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri.

Mohilary said he was giving up the use of personal security officers (PSOs) provided to him by the State Government. Mohilary’s decision came after the State Government reduced the number of his PSOs from 29 to 19.

“The Government has been reducing the number of my security guards. I have decided not to use any PSOs or other security officers provided by the State Government,” Mohilary said while terming the new development as an attempt to ‘finish’ him off.

It may be mentioned here that the BPF who has been in power in the Council since its creation in 2003 was an ally of the Congress till last year. However, the relation between the parties strained due to some differences and the BPF Ministers from the Gogoi Cabinet resigned after the BPF severed the alliance.

Besides BPF, Mohilary also leads the United People’s Front, a new platform of nine tribal political parties, which will contest in as many as 30 seats in the 2016 Assembly polls scheduled.
