Govt may set up performance auditors to keep an eye on infra-projects

Published on:

After the Prime Minister set up the inter-ministerial committee to oversee speedy progress of infra-projects at the Centre, the Government is now keen on setting up performance auditors to monitor and report from State level.

“We need to have performance auditors at State level who can closely monitor works on the projects. This will help us get a timely detailed report on the progress of projects at the ground level,” said Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Roads, Transport Highways and Shipping. He was addressing the council of road engineers at the India Road Congress.

“We should also put in place a system of incentivising developers who complete project before time. We had tried this in Maharashtra for some of our big public works department (PWD) projects and it worked,” he said.

Gadkari said that of the 51 road works which were pending for want of green clearances, 19 had to be cancelled as developers opted out as they were losing money heavily. “The delays lead to financial closures, leading to the banks start levying heavy interests on loans offered. This leads to a daily loss of Rs15 crore to the exchequer,” he said.Gadkari said that his government put measures in place at the earliest to stub unnecessary wastage of state funds.
