The Government on Sunday received flak from the Opposition parties over the reported move of CBI to give clean chit to Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh in the disproportionate asset case.
The Opposition charged that CBI has become a tool in the hands of the ruling party to further its political interests. leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said, “The Government is misusing (the) CBI to suppress its opponents, and going easy on cases involving parties that support the Government.”
His party colleague Balbir Punj said, “We are not surprised that Mulayam Singh Yadav is getting a free clean chit form the CBI and he in turn has started singing a different song as far as the policies of the UPA II Government are concerned,” BJP leader Balibir Punj said.
He was reacting to media reports that CBI is expected to give clean chit as the latter has reportedly agreed to support the UPA’s dream project Food Security Bill when it comes in the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
CPI leader Atul Anjan also said that Mulayam, who was initially opposed to Food Security ordinance, has suddenly changed his stance and has now decided to support it.
This shows that the CBI is being used for selfish reason, he said and pointed out that in the past Mulayam had accused the Government of misusing CBI against him.
CPI leader D Raja also said that the CBI must explain whenever questions are raised about its investigations. However, Congress leader Rashid Alvi defended the CBI saying that it works independently as was shown in former Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal’s case. Similarly, it is investigating independently in Mulayam’s case also, he added.
