The Centre on Tuesday cancelled the registration of 4,470 NGOs for violating the norms of accepting foreign contributions. Among those against whom the Centre cracked the whip for the violation of Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) are the likes of Kabir, floated by AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, besides hundreds of Church-linked organisations from Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.
In all, the licences of 4,470 NGOs under FCRA were cancelled. The NGOs’ registration was cancelled for “non submission of accounts and improper accounting,” said a senior Union Home Ministry official, adding that these NGOs were now barred from accepting foreign donations further.
“Majority of these NGOs were not submitting the accounts even after repeated reminders. Thousands of NGOs were caught for improper accounting and false reporting” said the official.
The FCRA Division of MHA also cancelled the registration for accepting foreign donations of those like the Supreme Court Bar Association, Delhi University and Vikram Sarabhai Foundation.
A majority of NGOs which lost the registration belong to Delhi, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. Other prominent organisations whose FCRA licences were cancelled include Panjab University, Gujarat National law University, Gargi College and lady Irwin College, Delhi.
This is the second major crackdown on NGOs by the Modi Government. licences of nearly 9,000 NGOs were cancelled in April for alleged violation of FCRA. The fresh round of cancellation started on May 5 and the highest number of such voluntary organisations — as many as 971 — were de-registered on Tuesday.
Five NGOs were de-registered on May 5, nine on May 7, 318 NGOs on May 8, 248 on May 11, 428 on May 12, 139 on May 13, 38 on May 14, 189 on May 27, 68 on May 29, 528 on Jun 1, 330 on June 2, 407 on June 3, 792 on June 4 and 971 on June 9.
