Governor says no to Kerala Government's plea for special Assembly session

Published on:

For the first time in the history of Kerala, Arif Mohammed Khan, the Governor, denied permission to the State Government for convening on Wednesday a special session of the Legislative Assembly. The Government needs the approval for convening special sessions of the House. The Governor had already issued his permission to convene the session for January 8.

The CPI(M) led LDF and the Congress-led UDF had decided to pass a resolution in the session rejecting the new Agricultural Laws enacted by the Centre which has resulted in thousands of farmers staging an agitation in the national capital. The unanimous resolutions  were to express solidarity with the farmers’ agitation and to reject the Farm Bills.

The Governor had sought clarification from the Kerala Government about the urgency and need of the special session. Sources close to the Governor said that he was not impressed or convinced with the explanation given by the Government and hence the decision to dismiss the plea for the special session. “His Excellency felt that there was no need for a special session  for the business mentioned by the Government. The Government  can adopt the resolutions in the  session scheduled for January 8,” said the Raj Bhavan source.
