The CPI(M)-led Kerala Government and the Congress-led UDF, the principal Opposition in the State are getting ready for another stand off with Governor Arif Mohammed Khan over convening the special session of the Legislative Assembly to pass resolutions demanding the scrapping of the Agriculture Laws enacted by the Centre.
Taken aback by the Governor’s refusal to convene a special session of the Legislative Assembly which had been scheduled for Thursday, the Government led by Vijayan decided to send another missive to the former seeking to convene a special session of one-hour duration on December 31 to adopt resolutions demanding the Centre to declare the Agriculture Bills null and void. The decision to contact the Governor seeking another special session of the House was taken in the Kerala cabinet which met on Thursday at the capital city. Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, who is addressed as the People’s Governor by Keralaites had antagonized Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the CPI(M) on Wednesday by declining the directive of the Government to convene a special session of the House for Thursday.
The Governor made it clear in his letter that there was no emergency situation in the State which requires an urgent session of the House. But the Chief Minister wants to send an indirect message to the Governor to convey that the latter was Constitutionally bound to act as per the directive of the State Government. In an earlier communication, the Governor had given his approval to convene the House on January 8 for budget presentation.
