Goa village to keep 'troublesome' Nigerian students at bay

A village in north Goa, where a Nigerian was brutally murdered by the drug mafia last week has on Tuesday formally resolved not to allow locals to lease rooms to Nigerian nationals on student visas.

Sarpanch of Parra, a village located adjoining Goa’s party hub of Calangute Delilah lobo said that the decision was necessary to keep the “troublesome” Nigerians at bay.

“They come here. live on fake papers, deal in drugs and cause a lot of nuisance,” said Delilah, who is also the wife of BJP MlA Michael lobo.

The murder of a Nigerian in the wee hours of Thursday in Parra (located 15 km from Panaji), allegedly by a rival drug gang had triggered riot-like situation with over 200 Nigerians taking on both locals as well as police, as they blockaded the National Highway-17 demanding consular presence during the post mortem of the deceased.

The incident triggered a knee-jerk reaction from the state government, which initiated a drive against all foreigners living in Goa on inadequate documents, which includes the several hundred Nigerians living in Parra alone.

“According to our resolution, only hotels can accommodate Nigerians, that too based on genuine documents,” Delilah said, after the specially convened meet.

A Nigerian diplomat has already warned that targeting of Nigerians and evicting them from rented homes in Goa, would attract retribution on Indians living in Nigeria.
