In the face of mounting public disenchantment with the Government’s response to the Canacona building tragedy in which 31people lost their lives, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar announced on Monday that the matter will now be probed by the Goa Police Crime Branch.

Parrikar, who was speaking to reporters, in the south Goa commercial hub of Margão, said that he would want the Crime Branch to “get to the bottom of the matter.”

“The case is being handed over to Crime Branch. let them investigate and get to the bottom of the matter,” he said. Earlier on Monday, a local court rejected the bail applications filed by municipal engineers, who had a hand in granting permission for the project.

The Government has also instituted a probe headed by a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer VK Jha, while one town planning official has been arrested and the contractor arrested.

The Opposition as well as civil society activists and the media, have accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Government of going soft on the real estate company constructing the five-storey building in the Ruby Residency Housing Complex at Chawdi, Canacona 75 kms from here.
