Gorkha Janmukti Morcha chief Bimal Gurung on Sunday met President Pranab Mukherjee who was visiting Darjeeling to attend a function of a missionary school.
Though the details of talks were not known and though Gurung said it was a “courtesy call” where “we have placed a memorandum of demands” the GJM sources said he made complaints against the ruling Trinamool Congress for “oppressing and torturing the people of Darjeeling Hills.”
Gurung, who had allied with the Trinamool before the 2011 Assembly and broke off with the ruling party this year, has been raising fresh demands for a separate Gorkhaland State reportedly told the President how the Government had arrested hundreds of his workers and leaders even as they were continuing there agitation peacefully.
According to sources, Gurung was requested by the President to rejoin the post of Gorkhaland Territorial Association chairperson which he had resigned early this year making fresh demands for a separate State. “Yes he has made such requests but it will have to be considered by our party,” Gurung said indicating that he could once again join as the chief executive officer of the Gorkhaland Territorial Association.
