Chief of Indian Army, General Bipin Rawat visited the Eastern Command on Tuesday and reviewed the security scenario with the Corp Commanders in the strategically important command headquarters in the region
Although the top Army brass here termed the visit as a routine one after Rawat took over as the Army Chief, yet the visit assumes significance as it came days after the northeastern militants ambushed an Assam Rifles convoy in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district on Sunday that led to killing of two jawans and injury of two others.
Security forces had been conducting counter insurgency operations along the Assam-Arunachal border following the attack and security apparatus across the state had been reviewed in the run up to Republic Day celebrations.
The General visited the strategic Gajraj Corps on the eve of the Republic Day and lt. Gen. Praveen Bakshi, GOC-in- C Eastern Command and lt. Gen. AS Bedi, GOC Gajraj Corps received the General. The Chief, accompanied by the Eastern Army Commander and the Corps Commander visited Tawang and the forward areas in Western Arunachal Pradesh.
Rawat was also briefed by the Corps Commander on the security situation in the Corps, both from external threat and internal security point of view.
It may be mentioned here that General Rawat had himself commanded a Corps in the Eastern Command and is well acquainted with the nuances of operational scenario here. He was satisfied with the operational preparedness of Gajraj Corps and encouraged all ranks of the Corps to keep up the high state of alertness and professionalism displayed by them.
The General Rawat left Tezpur for Imphal before moving to Delhi.
