Professor SAR Geelani, who was acquitted in the 2001 Parliament attack case, was beaten up by unidentified people inside the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University while participating in a discussion over declaring the day of terrorist Afzal Guru’s execution as martyrs’ day and Kashmir issue.

Geelani was beaten up by a group of people inside a hall of Tapti hostel late on Wednesday evening. He somehow managed to escape from the place but the people pelted stones on his vehicle. According to police, the force was already deployed in anticipation of suspected unwanted incident. They helped him to come out of the hall but no one was arrested.

“A few men barged into the hall after switching off the lights and started beating him (Gilani). He was punched on his face,” a police officer told The Pioneer. The attackers were raising slogans against him, said the officer.

Geelani, who is a Delhi University professor, had criticised the execution of Afzal Guru in 2013. He was arrested by the Delhi Police for planning an attack on Parliament in 2001. Guru was convicted and given death sentence into the case. He was executed on February 9, 2013 in Tihar’s jail. Police said the attackers apparently belong to Akhil Bharitya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The investigation is on.
