The water level of river Ganga continued to rise in this holy city and in comparison to a day ago, the rising speed has increased from 30 mm to 40 mm per hour here on Friday. During the last 24 hours, the water level has increased by 84 cm against 56 cm a day ago from 63.48 metres to 64.32 metres and due to this at several places the connectivity between one ghat to another has been broken. The continuous rise for the last many days due to the incessant rains in the hilly Himalayan regions and floods in many northern states has now posed flood threats in this belt of Purvanchal (eastern Uttar Pradesh) in the coming days though at present the river level is still far below than the warning level in Varanasi. According to the report of Middle Ganga Division-III of Central Water Commission (CWC), the water level of Ganga was recorded at 64.32 metres at 8 am on Friday against the warning level at 70.262 metres. However, the upstream trend indicates that the major water is coming from Yamuna through Sangam in Prayagraj as the level of Ganga was recorded steady at Phaphamau in Prayagraj. The Ganga was recorded rising right from Prayagraj to Ghazipur, including Mirzapur and Varanasi. However, the water level in Gomti at Jaunpur is steady.
