Two people were killed and two others injured after a seven-storey under-construction building collapsed in Gachibowli on Saturday, trapping workers under the debris and damaging nearby apartment buildings.

The collapse took place in Anjayya Nagar, where rescue teams recovered two bodies from the rubble. A fire official said the victims were located with the help of a victim location system device.

The two deceased were workers, according to Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) Commissioner A V Ranganath.

Two people living in neighbouring apartments were also injured after debris fell on nearby buildings. One of them was hospitalised. Several residents were forced to leave their flats after the structures were damaged.

Residents said they heard a loud noise in the afternoon before discovering that the under-construction building had come down.

Ranganath, who inspected the site, said the collapsed structure had seven floors and a penthouse and stood on a plot measuring around 50-60 square yards.

He said the building, along with some other structures in the area, appeared to have been constructed near a drain and without the required setbacks.

HYDRAA and the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation will jointly identify and demolish buildings found to have violated construction rules, Ranganath said.

He also urged residents living in buildings constructed in violation of norms to vacate them, citing safety concerns.

Ranganath said officials had received information that the owner of the collapsed building was involved in constructing similar structures in the area, including buildings being used as commercial hostels for IT employees.

HYDRAA will examine the owner's role and coordinate with the civic body on further action, he said.

CMC Commissioner G Srijana said the building had been seized by authorities around four months ago, but construction resumed on Friday.

The structure collapsed before officials could take further action, she said, adding that action would be taken against other buildings found to have violated construction norms.
