Three Border Security Force  personnel, including two Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) rank officials, were killed while another was injured in a case of fratricidal firing in Assam’s Dhubri district on Thursday.

BSF commandant Cl Belwa said that the incident took place at Hatichar Border Out Post (BOP) along the Indo-Bangla border in the district around 11 am. “According to preliminary investigation, one Prabhakar Mishra, a cook, fired at Assistant Sub-Inspectors Surinder and Babulal after an altercation. Both of them died on the spot,” Belwa said while adding that one constable, Omprakash Sahoo, who got caught in the firing, received bullet injuries in his left thigh.

“After killing the two, Mishra shot at himself and got seriously injured. He, however, breathed his last on the way to hospital,” said the BSF spokesman, adding that the assailant was a very young guy who had joined the BSF in 2011. “It was learnt that he had picked up a quarrel with both the slain officers for reasons not known,” Belwa said adding that an inquiry had already been ordered in this regard.
