In yet another incident underscoring Kolkata’s fast emergence in arms-manufacturing market the police on Sunday busted a workshop producing arms for the past several months.

At least 50 sophisticated 9mm pistols, cartridges and five lathe machines to manufacture arms were seized by the police, senior officials said. The illegal workshop had been set up at a rented house at Rabindra Nagar in South 24 Parganas.

The owner of the house who had rented the apartment to the ones who were involved in production of arms was arrested. “Those who were involved have fled the spot and police are searching for them” a senior official said.

This is the third such busting of an arms manufacturing unit in the past one month. Earlier such units were busted at Maheshtala and Baruipur in the same district.

Meanwhile, four civic policemen were injured, one of them seriously when crude bombs stored inside Shibpur police station in Howrah went off accidentally, police said.

Though there was no clue as to how the bombs found their way inside the police station premises inside sources said the crudes went off while the interiors were being cleaned.
