Eighteen days after he set himself on fire at his Malbar Hill residence here, Maharashtra’s Additional Director General Police (DGP) RK Sahay on Thursday succumbed to severe burns that he had sustained during his suicide attempt.

Fifty-two-year-old Sahay, who had been rushed by his family members to the Bombay Hospital after he attempted suicide in his first floor flat at “Amber Avanti” Apartments on the Narayan Dhabolkar Road to Bombay Hospital on the night of September 14, breathed his last on Thursday morning.

Sahay, who had sustained 60 per cent burns in his suicide attempt, was reportedly not responding to treatment. His condition deteriorated during the last few days.

The reason behind his attempting to commit suicide remained mystery. The police investigating the case could not record Sahay’s statement, owing to his deteriorated condition. Nor could the investigators elicit much from his family members.

A 1986 batch IPS officer, Sahay was heading the Maharashtra State Police Housing & Welfare Corporation limited. He had hit headlines after he, in his the then capacity as the vigilance officer of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), had investigated the irregularities allegedly committed by

senior IAS officer Deepak Kapoor, in the MSRTC.
