Forensic proofs substantiate case against Dec 16 rapists

The December 16 rapists-cum-murders are set to get harshest punishment as the Delhi Police on Friday told a court that they have gathered clinching evidence supported by the forensic reports to suggest that the 23-year-old paramedic was gangraped in the same bus on December 16 night, of which the CCTV footage was recovered.

“The curtains, seat cover, bunch of hair recovered from the bus, DNA profile prepared from the articles seized from the bus, proves that the bus was used in the scene of crime and the arrested accused were onboard the vehicle during the gruesome attack,” the prosecution told the court.

Special Public Prosecutor Dayan Krishnan said DNA links establish the identities of each accused and also the identity of each object which is part of the case. Krishnan said, “the bite marks on the victim’s body were that of Akshay and Ram Singh and it proves that they also were actively participating in the crime...”

The court has recorded the statements of 85 prosecution witnesses. Delhi Police had filed the chargesheet in the case on January 03 in record time and the case was transferred to the fast track court on January 17.

The sixth and most brutal accused, a juvenile, is being tried before Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) separately. The order on juvenile has been reserved and the board is to pronounce it on August 31. The Supreme Court had earlier restricted the Board from delivering the verdict as the apex court was hearing a PIl challenging the juvenile law filed by Subramanian Swamy.

The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed the JJB to deliver its verdict. The inquiry against the juvenile in the gangrape and robbery case had concluded on July 5. While the four other accused are standing trial in the fast-track court, one of the accused, Ram Singh, allegedly committed suicide in Tihar Jail, where he was lodged.
