The agitation for the release of JNU students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar spread to Tamil Nadu on Thursday with a group of “revolutionary folk singers” under folk-singer Kovan staging a demonstration in Chennai demanding the banning of ABVP from all educational campuses in the country.
Kovan and his 57 associates were taken into custody by the police when they staged a demonstration in front of Shastri Bhavan at Nunbgambakkam in the city which houses all Central Government offices.
This is the second time Kovan, a popular extreme left wing folk singer is arrested. He was in the news last October for singing obscene songs against Chief Minister Jayalalithaa demanding total prohibition in Tamil Nadu. Following a case filed by the State Government, Kovan was slapped with a sedition case and arrested.
Kovan sang songs making fun of the Modi Government as well as the Sangh Parivar outfits for vitiating the “secular fabric of the country”.
