Fog hits flight operations at IGI Airport
Published on:

Dense fog enveloping the national Capital on Thursday morning led to disruption in the flight movement at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. The visibility dropped to nil between 12.30 am and 4 am, on both the runways, suspending flight movements for several hours.

The visibility was recorded below 50 metres till 5 am after which the flights operations commenced. Movement of over 250 flights was disrupted; five flights were diverted to other locations including Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Bangalore. Poor weather in Delhi and adjoining locations led to cancellation of 15 flights on the day.

The passengers’ worries were aggravated on the day when the baggage scanning belts at the domestic terminal stopped working. Due to the dysfunctional baggage belts, the passengers’ registered baggage was carried with the help of the porters to the respective airlines. This caused a lot of problems to the travellers who had to wait for the long hours at the T1 departure terminal.

The process of manually carrying the luggage took a lot of time and affected the schedule of over two dozen flights. Much to the dismay of the passengers, when the passengers reached their respective destinations they found out that their luggage hasn’t reached.

This aggravated the troubles of the already hassled passengers. The worst-hit due to the problem was the Indigo Airlines, whose schedule was the most affected.
