Flood situation in Assam still grim

Published on:

The flood situation in Assam turned grim again with overflowing waters inundating a total of 1,031 villages in 14 districts of the State and affecting over 4 lakh people so far.

The water level of Brahmaputra, Jiadhal, Beki, Kushiara and some other tributaries increased in the last 24 hours due to incessant rainfall, particularly in the Upper reaches of the Brahmaputra and submerged the villages.

There is, however, no report of any human casuality so far in the current wave of floods.

The Assam State Disaster management Authority (ASDMA) said that the mighty Brahmaputra is flowing above danger level at many places in Dibrugarh, Jorhat and Dhubri districts while Jia Bharali is flowing above danger level at Sonitpur district. Other rivers including Puthimari, Beki in lower Assam and Kushiara in Barak Valley were also flowing above danger level in some district.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday reviewed the flood situation and asked directed concerned district administration to provide immediate relief to people affected by excessive rains leading to floods.

According to ASDMA, the flood situation has affected Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Dhemaji districts badly with over 600 villages of Dhemaji remaining under water for the last 24 hours.
