Heavy downpour for past few days have flooded four districts of Assam, affecting 42,658 people and inundating over 2,000 hectares of crop land even as the Army has been called in to assist the civil administration in rescue and relief operations in one of the flood-hit districts.

The rains have also triggered landslides at many places in Barak Valley and Dima Hasao districts of Assam, which affected road connectivity between Dima Hasao capital, Haflong with the rest of the State.

The Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said that lakhimpur, Jorhat, Sivsagar and newly-created Charaideo districts have been flooded in the last 24 hours.

The Chairaideo district administration has called in the Army, the National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Rescue Force (SDRF) personnel to assist the relief and rescue operations.

State Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia on Sunday reviewed the flood situation across the State and asked the Deputy Commissioners in all the districts to be prepared to face any situation related to the floods.

Pipersenia also reviewed the flood preparedness of the State with heads of all departments and took stock of medicines and essential drugs available with the Health and Family Welfare Departments.

“Instructions have been issued to all the DCs and other civil administration officials in the districts to remain vigilant over the flood situation and be prepared to face any situation in the wake of a flood,” said Pipersenia.

Pipersenia has also asked the Water Resources (WR) department, the PWD (NH division) and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officials to send their officers for joint inspection of the damaged portion of National Highway (NH) 53 at Panchgram near Hailakandi in Barak Valley on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Central Water Commission (CWC) said that the river Burhidehing in Khowang and Desang river in Sivsagar districts have been flowing above danger level. The, Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Borjhar near Guwahati, however, predicted that weather condition will improve across the State after Monday.
