Flip-flop over vandalism in temple

Continuous flip flop over the status of mental health of accused who had vandalised famous 'Aap Shambu' temple on June 14 in upper Roopnagar area of Jammu has created piquant situation for the alliance govt headed by Mehbooba Mufti in Jammu and Kashmir.

The sensitive issue rocked the lower house of the state assembly in Srinagar on Thursday soon after ruling party MlA from Shopian Mohd Yousaf Bhat raised the issue referring to the order of the District Administration, Jammu as per which detention of Yasir Alfaz S/O Kher Din Rio Village Shiva, Tehsil Bhaderwah, District Doda was ordered under Public Safety Act (PSA), 1978, in connection with his involvement in the sacrilegious act at Aap Shamboo Temple in Janipur on June 14.

In nine long days the State Govt has failed to ascertain the mental health of the accused in the case. Deputy Commissioner Jammu Simrandeep Singh Thursday confirmed to The Pioneer, "PSA was slapped on Yasir only after I got a requisition for PSA" .

When asked to clarify whether he (Yasir) was examined by the panel of experts to determine his mental health and whether he is in receipt of the conclusive report he tactfully pushed the ball in the court of local police authorities. "Since he is in police custody it will be appropriate if you ask them" Deputy Commissioner claimed.

Inside the House PDP legislator posed a direct query to the Govt “How can the Government slap PSA on a person who was declared lunatic”. On June 15 Minister of Rural Development Department Abdul Haq had made a statement in the House regarding June 14 incident at Jammu. Haq had claimed the preliminary investigations suggest that the accused person who entered the temple is a lunatic patient.”

Independent legislator from langate Abdul Rashid too joined the chorus and tried to put alliance Govt on the mat. Some other PDP legislators also raised the issue seeking its immediate revocation.

The PDP legislators were  countered by one of the BJP MlA RS Pathania on the floor of the house. He charged the accused had vitiated the atmosphere in Jammu and he should be given tough punishment.
