Flash floods hit Assam again

Published on:

Close to three lakh people were affected in over ten districts of Assam as flash floods have hit the State since Wednesday inundating over 600 villages even as Army has been deployed to help the civil administration in relief and rescue operations in many flood-hit districts.

There is, however, no report of any human causality so far due to the floods.

A total of 2,96,929 people have been affected in Dhemaji, Kokrajhar, Chirang, Bongaigaon, lakhimpur, Tinsukia and Dibrugarh, Sivsagar, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Barpeta and Goalpara district till Thursday, the officials of the Assam Disaster Management authority (ASDMA) said.

Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon and Chirang and Dhemaji districts remained the worst hit. While 187 villages in Kokrajhar have been inundated, over 100 villages remained under water in eastern Assam’s Dhemaji district. Flood waters have also submerged 113 villages in lower Assam’s Bongaigaon district while 42 villages in Chirang have been affected badly due to the floods.

While over one lakh people were affected in Bongaigaon district alone, another 40,000 people were affected in Dhemaji district followed by 48,000 people in Kokrajhar district, the officials said.

Besides, a total of 27,087 hectares of crop land have also been affected in all the flood hit districts till Thursday, ASDMA officials said.

The district administration has opened 124 relief camps in Kokrajhar, Chirang, Bongaigaon and in Dibrugarh districts which have been housing 84,779 marooned people till Thursday evening, ASDMA officials further informed.

The floods have also snapped communication to many places by damaging roads and bridges in Chirang, Dhemaji, Barpeta, Golapara and in Cachar districts. There have also been reports of breaches of embankments from many places in the flood affected districts.

The Assam Government has taken serious note of the situation and asked all the concerned districts administration to intensify relief and rescue operations as well as to help the needy and displaced people.

Meanwhile, the Indian Army has deployed two columns, including one officer, two JCO’s and thirty five other ranks along with a motor boat, life jackets and other flood relief stores in each columns, for flood relief operations in flood hit Kokrajhar and Chirang districts on Thursday. The Army has rescued many villagers from inundated areas and has provided relief in terms of food and medical assistance in coordination with the civil administration.

A statement issued by the Army here said the Army, in consonance with the civil administration, was also geared for further operations as the flood situation worsens.

Earlier in June this year floods had affected over four lakh people in 15 districts of the State killing at least five people and causing severe displacement.
